Enniskillen Royal Grammar school were proud to host a Commonwealth Day Discussion Event on the Lough Shore site as part of today’s events taking place in Fermanagh. Delegates to the event included 40 pupils from across the community, Mrs Louise Cullen from BBC NI, as conference mediator and honoured guests of The Lord Lieutenant Viscount Brookeborough, Dame Mary Peters and Miss Holly Nixon.
The Commonwealth’s Focus for 2018 is ‘Towards a Common Future’ building upon the 2017 theme of ‘A Peace-Building Commonwealth’, this year’s theme explores how the Commonwealth can address global challenges and work to create a better future for all citizens through sub-themes of sustainability, safety, prosperity and fairness.
It was this theme that formed the basis of the discussion and feedback from the many post-16 pupil delegates in the room. Each of the 4 groups had to focus their attention to one of 4 themes, Sustainable Development, Prosperity, Fairness and Safety; identifying 3 key priorities, within each category, that they felt should be key issues for the Commonwealth to address for the coming year.
The event highlighted the breadth of talent and wisdom of the young people of Fermanagh, delivering informed and thoughtful feedback on topical issues that seasoned politicians and leaders find challenging. Congratulations to all involved and thank you to all delegates and guests for their valuable and considered input.
