The 1608 Royal Schools Debating Competition was hosted yesterday by ERGS with great success for the ERGS team of Isaac Irvine and Daragh Tyson who were joint Winners with Royal School Dungannon. The duo came head-to-head with Royal School Armagh and won the vote of the House with their commanding poise and razor-sharp rebuttals. Daragh also very deservedly won the Best Speaker accolade and the adjudicator was particularly impressed with his assured performance in handling Points of Information made by the Opposition. The adjudicator, Rev. Adrian Dorrian, praised the robust, finessed performances of all the speakers and the enthusiastic engagement from the Floor of the House. He also spoke about his love of debating as a student and about how his debating skills continue to serve him in his profession today. Councillor Diana Armstrong also spoke briefly of her affiliation with the debating event due to the Harry West Cup, donated by her family. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this a memorable event for all involved and thanks to the Debate Club pupils for their help on the day and for their great team spirit.
