Four of our A2 Music students travelled to Dublin last Thursday 19th January to watch sold-out Joey McKneely’s award-winning staging of ‘West Side Story’ in the Bord Gais Energy Theatre. Three of the show’s musical numbers feature on the A2 specification so it was a wonderful opportunity for the boys to hear Bernstein’s music played by a live orchestra, expertly conducted by the wonderful Donald Chan. Provocative finger snapping of street gangs, Puerto Rican girls’ whirling skirts on New York City’s flat roofs and derelict West Side back yards, along with just a few notes of Leonard Bernstein’s world-famous score, featuring songs such as Maria, Tonight, Somewhere, America and I Feel Pretty, immediately evoked these images of ‘West Side Story.’
Such culturally rich experiences are priceless for our students, and a wonderful time was had by all.
