Debating Society saw the last debate of 2019 take place on the 19th December, with the house debating the very festive motion of:
“This house believes that Christmas has become too commercialised and has lost all religious meaning.”
Proposing the motion were Dylan Thompson and Tomás Roma, with James and Adrianna Hurst opposing the motion.
The debate saw a large number of ethical issues being debated and discussed such as the emphasis on consumerism, the nature of Christmas traditions such as decorations and giving gifts and also the presence of religion in Christmas festivities in the 21st century, thus showing the huge amount of research that both sides put into their arguments, yet it was the opposition who won the debate after winning the house vote.
Debating society returned in 2020 in a new venue, T12 in Lough Shore, where it will be located from now on, being debated was the motion:
“This house believes that beauty pageants should be banned.”
Proposing the motion was Nadine Curtis, with Tomás Roma opposing the motion.
Both sides kicked 2020 off with an interesting and fierce debate, with both sides arguing their cases strongly discussing issues such as the impact of pageants on body image, the level of diversity in beauty pageants and how they should be reformed to promote positive role models.
Both sides showed a high level of confidence in answering questions from the house, and clearly demonstrated how their debating skills have developed over the past few weeks.
Both sides gave strong final summaries of their arguments, and in the end the house voted against the motion.
