Enniskillen Royal Grammar School and its pupils were deeply honoured to play a part in the VE 75 Commemoration events in County Fermanagh. At 3 pm on Friday 8th May 2020, on the terrace at our Lough Shore Site, precisely 75 years after Churchill’s Victory Speech, the haunting notes of the ‘Last Post and Reveille’ were played by bugler, Ellen Bloomfield from Year 14 followed by fellow Year 14 pupil Mathew Read’s tribute ,’ Battles Over’ as a lone piper. Annie Fowler from Year 8 read an extract from the moving poem ‘For The Fallen’ The evocative WW11 Air Raid siren was handcranked by members of the Lisbellaw and South Fermanagh World War Society and Gary Wilson led the Nation’s Toast and Cry for Peace using the VE Day 75 Brass Hand Bell.
Earlier on Thursday evening Robert Northridge spoke to Julian Fowler from BBC NI about his book chronicling the many stories of Portora pupils who fought in the Second World War. He was joined by Dominic Robertson, a current member of the Enniskillen Royal Grammar School Cadet group.
