It was a long season of only training for the Senior Girls ERGS rugby team so far, but when an opportunity of a game came about, even against a really strong Erne Integrated Team, the girls were all very keen to get stuck in.
The large squad of 23 girls was a credit to the school but only 7 can take to the field in this format of the game. That meant many rolling substitutions which wasn’t ideal.
The first quarter was hugely competitive with the Integrated girls taking an early two try lead but our girls held their nerve and replied with two of their own from Scarlett Keys.
The next section of the match saw the Integrated girls take control of the middle of the park, especially with their three Ulster players. They scored some well worked trys but the ERGS girls tackled them right up to the line, never giving them an easy score.
The final parts of the game saw another ERGS try with Anna Wilson scoring out wide.
Although the score was in favour of the Integrated girls, the spirit of the game was excellent as many of these girls share the same club shirt when playing for ERFC but today was the Erne Integrated girl’s day.
The lessons learnt from today’s game will give the senior ERGS girls a great boost in confidence and they also can’t now wait to get their teeth into further fixtures in the New Year, as this was their first fixture in over 18 months.
Well done to each and every one of them, for some superb tackling and scores.
