On the morning of Friday 8th November, we held our Remembrance Services in school, honouring the men and women who have sacrificed themselves in service to our country. We welcomed guests from our partner schools in the Fermanagh Learning Community and from the wider Community to our Senior Remembrance Event attended by our Sixth Form pupils. We were also delighted to be joined by a group of staff and pupils from Clongowes Wood, our partner school of forty four years.
During the service where the readings and prayers were led by our Senior Pupil leaders and pupils from our partner schools, Reverend Greg Alexander delivered a thought provoking address on the impact of war in the displacement of peoples and the need for a Christian response of welcome to strangers in our midst. Wreaths were laid by Robbie McIlwrath and Leah Irwin , our Head Boy and Girl, and John Aiken, President of the Old Portora Union, together with a pupil leader from Clongowes Wood who laid a wreath at the Clongowes memorial outside the Steele Hall, to commemorate the young men from Clongowes Wood College who gave their lives during the First World War.
The music was conducted by Mrs Bloomfield and played by the Senior Wind Band, complemented by the Pipe Band on the front terrace, to both welcome and bid farewell to our guests. Bugler Erin Trimble played The Last Post and Reveille with precision and tone, fitting to the occasion.
