The Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators

    By Enniskillen Royal | Latest News | Comments are Closed | 22 May, 2024 | 2

We are delighted to inform you that the following students have won the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators for French for Northern Ireland.

Area Winner French Level 1 Henry Elliott Y8

Area Winner French Level 3 Barry Hutchinson Y12

Area Winner Italian Level 3 Barry Hutchinson Year 12

Henry translated a poem from Raymond Queneau entitled “Un Enfant a dit” from French to English. Raymond Queneau was a twentieth-century novelist and poet. He was known for experimenting with language and this poem includes examples of him playing with how words sound when read out loud.

Barry translated an extract is from the novel “Nos Richesses” by Algerian writer Kaouther Adimi from French to English. The novel tells the story of a bookshop in Algiers which survived through the Second World War and the Algerian War of Independence (1954-1962). In this passage the narrator tells the reader how to get to the bookshop when they visit Algiers.

Barry also won the area competition Level 3 for Italian! Despite not learning it in school!

Over 16,000 students participated in the prize in 2024 and over 3,600 entries were judged, so this is a fantastic achievement.

Both winners will receive a certificate in the post in June.

Félicitations à tous les deux !
