Enniskillen Royal 2ndXV vs Foyle College 2XV 8 September 2018

    By Enniskillen Royal | Latest News | Comments are Closed | 9 September, 2018 | 0

The success of last season’s 2XV was always going to be difficult to emulate, (as they only lost to one school throughout the year), but this year’s crew made an excellent start when they overwhelmed Foyle at home by 38 points to 5. The fact that the majority of the squad comes from Year 12 makes it all the more impressive.

Led by the battle-hardened Tom Pendry, ERGS were on top from the start showing great mobility and a desire to keep the ball alive at all costs. Ben Davis, Mathew Graham and Matthew Beatty punched through the gain line time and again allowing scrum half, Andrew Patton, to keep moving the ball out towards the wings . The handling skills, most notably the timing and accuracy of passes combined with intelligent running lines made for flowing rugby that was entertaining as well as being very effective.

John Fitzpatrick, a hooker possessed of excellent footwork, made the opening score. Having been denied moments before when the referee judged his charge for the line as being “held up”, he returned to the fray once again and ERGS went into an early 5 to nil lead. George Foster’s conversion attempt skimmed the outside of the righthand post, his only miss of the day.

Smooth handling and clever reading of the game by ERGS meant the point of attack was ever changing and Foyle simply couldn’t cover all gaps. A try for Henry Keys and a second for John Fitzpatrick, both through forward dominance at rucks, brought the score to 19-0 in favour the home side. When Foyle’s valiant attempts to power their way out of their 22m zone failed they resorted to clearance kicks. These were comfortably fielded by Jack O’Hare who was consummate at full back. He was intelligently supported by retreating centres, Stephen Balfour and Thom Morton. Together they quickly turned defence into attack and speedy wings Sam Balfour and Jason Bothwell were given plenty of opportunity to show their turn of foot, both making considerable meterage. One such counter attack led to Balfour skipping past two players to run around behind the posts for Royal’s fourth try and a halftime score of ERGS 26 – Foyle 0.

Whether Foyle upped their game in the second half or ERGS slackened their pace is difficult to tell but this half turned out to be a much closer affair. EGRS integrated 7 subs into the game during the half which may have disrupted their continuity but the quality of the players was not diminished, as evidenced by the performances of Craig Johnston at full back and Angus Fraser at centre. However, the loss of dominance at the ruck meant that replacement wings Ben Donaldson and James McKee had almost no attacking ball. They were, never the less, resolute in defence.

It was in the forwards that Foyle found expression for their renewed vigour. Some very solid members of their pack played repeated “pick and go” to great effect. Relentless recycling aided by good handling at the base of the ruck brought them up to the ERGS try line for the first time and they were rewarded with an unconverted try. As often happens with a score in such circumstances, confidence was boosted and Foyle made the second half a much more even contest.

Despite this revival by the opposition ERGS were never going to lose the match and as the second half wore on their power and speed, if not their organisation, led to a modicum of dominance being restored. Hugo Graham and George Foster kept varying the plays; David Scollan’s accurate throwing maintained the line out superiority with quite a few steals by Zac Havers and Michael Rooney; John Elliot put in an excellent shift in rucks and mauls. Two more ERGS tries followed, one via slick passing in the backs finished off by Craig Johnston and one through the pack where captain, Tom Pendry, got just reward for his relentless work rate.

It was a competent performance against a traditionally weaker side and while more difficult opponents lie ahead the players and coaches can be well satisfied with the skill levels and commitment shown by this young side .

Try scorers:- John Fitzpatrick (2), Henry Keys, Sam Balfour, Tom Pendry, Craig Johnston.

    Conversions:- George Foster (4)

    Jack Kennedy
    Class of 2020

Subjects studied at A’ Level: Maths, Geography, Technology & Design, and BTEC Engineering (South West College)

Post School Pathway: MEng Civil Engineering, Newcastle University, including an industrial placement year with GRAHAM Construction

Current Role: Graduate Civil Engineer, GRAHAM Construction

After leaving ERGS in 2020, I moved to Newcastle to study Civil Engineering at Newcastle University. During my degree, I completed a placement year with GRAHAM Construction, where I had the opportunity to work on the Leith Outer Berth project in Scotland. The £50 million project forms part of Scotland’s largest renewable energy hub, supporting the development of offshore wind energy. It was my first experience of working on a project of that scale and gave me a real appreciation for the role civil engineers play in delivering major infrastructure projects.

Following my placement year, I returned to Newcastle to complete my degree before going on to study for a Master’s in Civil Engineering. The combination of university life and practical experience helped confirm that engineering was the career path I wanted to follow.

University wasn’t all lectures and assignments, though. I was a member of Newcastle University Boat Club and had the privilege of competing at the Henley Royal Regatta, which was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my time there. After rowing, I took up rugby again during the 2023/24 season, having also played throughout my time at school. Balancing sport alongside school and university taught me a lot about managing my time and making the most of the opportunities available. More recently, I have developed a passion for endurance sport and, in 2025, completed Ironman Copenhagen, as well as taking part in several other Ironman events.

After graduating, I returned to GRAHAM Construction as a Graduate Civil Engineer and am currently based in Dundee, working on another offshore wind project. It’s been great to return to a company that played such an important role in my development during my placement year and to continue building my career in an industry that is contributing to the future of renewable energy.

Looking back, my time at both Portora Royal School and ERGS helped shape the person I am today. The support and encouragement I received from teachers gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. Whether it was through academics, sport or extracurricular activities, school taught me the importance of working hard, getting involved and being willing to step outside my comfort zone.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned since leaving school, it’s that you don’t have to have everything figured out straight away. Being open to new experiences has led me to opportunities I never would have imagined when I was sitting in the classrooms at Portora and ERGS. From moving away from home and competing at Henley to completing an Ironman and working on major engineering projects, it’s been an exciting journey so far, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it takes me next.

🎉 Congratulations to Michael Clarke (Past-Pupil)🎉

We were delighted to receive news from the University of Dundee of Michael’s outstanding success at his degree show.

Michael was surprised to learn on the opening morning of the show that he had been selected to receive an award for his work. The award was presented later that day at a prize-giving ceremony.

His final project, a movable cocktail bar, proved such a success that it has already been purchased by a cocktail bar business. In addition to the award, Michael received a £250 cash prize, the highest cash prize presented.

The degree show, showcased students’ work to local businesses, members of the public and representatives from other universities. To cap off an excellent few days, Michael later received confirmation of his final degree results, graduating with a 2:1 Honours degree.

A fantastic achievement and a wonderful reward for all of Michael’s hard work. We congratulate him and wish him every happiness and success in the future.
