Key Stage 5

Although demanding, an A level in Chemistry is recognised as a major achievement. Potential employers value the analytical and conceptual skills that are developed during the study of Chemistry. Such skills, coupled with the ability to work in a meticulous and accurate manner, enable Chemistry students to pursue careers within, or outside, the vast area of Science.

The A level course is divided into 5 modules. Modules 1 and 2 are needed to achieve an AS. All 5 modules are needed for the full A level.

Course Outline

Module Nature of Assessment Assessment Weighting Award Obtained Award Obtained

A2 Unit 4 Organic Chemistry and Analysis 25%

(41.6% of A2)

A2 Unit 5 Practical Assessment 10%

(16.7% of A2)

Course Content

AS-level Chemistry includes learning about atomic structure, bonding, the Periodic Table, some organic chemistry, energy in chemistry, chemical equilibrium, amongst others. After year 13 you will have a large degree of chemistry knowledge. As shown in the table above you will be assessed by two written examinations. There is no formal practical assessment in year 13.

Having an AS-level in Chemistry broadens your career choice. Many universities see AS-level Chemistry as very desirable, particularly if you have a good range of A-level subjects.

After successful completion of the AS course in year 13 you may wish to continue with a further 3 modules in year 14 and obtain the full A level in Chemistry. The A2 modules are much more demanding than those completed in year 13 and include further organic chemistry and more detailed studies in kinetics, equilibrium, energetics and redox systems.

Career Opportunities

Possible career and course options available to you and your A-level chemistry qualification include: medicine, pharmacy, veterinary science, chemistry, biochemistry, food science/nutrition, forensic science, biological/engineering careers, optometry, microbiology, natural sciences, pharmacology and physiology. Careers and courses that find chemistry desirable include food technology, nursing, physiotherapy, radiography, paramedical courses, law and zoology.

Chemists can:

  • Analyse
  • Make decisions
  • Ask questions
  • Think critically
  • Solve problems

SUCCESS AT STORMONT FOR ERGS DEBATERS
The historic Senate Chamber at Stormont played host to the Grand Final of NI Schools Debating Competition where Annie Fowler (Year 14) finished her ERGS debating journey on a high, winning the Best Individual Speaker award alongside the Team of the Year 2026 award with her co-debater Luchia McCusker (Year 13). The award was presented this year by Health Minister Mike Nesbitt. This is the second year running that ERGS have claimed this coveted prize!
The evening began with the Best Individual Speaker Final, debating the motion: “This House believes that it is symbolic of Belfast’s sense of its own importance that it can produce a city of seven quarters.”
Annie grounded her approach in a Fermanagh perspective and delivered an impressive Opposition speech, engaging the audience with her fresh and enlightening take on the complexities of Belfast and its seven quarters. Annie’s Points of Information were sharp and perceptive, and she kept her poise and eloquence in response to the Propositions’ interjections.
The Team of the Year award recognises Annie and Luchia for their team performance throughout the course of the competition where they excelled in their display of mature, respectful and courteous debate underpinned by critical thinking.
We commend both Annie and Luchia for role-modelling our school values and ethos with such grace and maturity and congratulate them on their achievement.
