Home Literacy and Language Spanish Department

Introduction
With some 350 million native speakers and around 70 million secondary speakers, Spanish is the third or fourth most commonly spoken language in the world. Only Mandarin, and Hindi (and according to some sources, English) have more speakers. Spanish is an official language on four continents and is the mother tongue in 21 countries. It is the third most used language on the Internet. The stage is set for a further enormous increase in the usage of the language. There are currently 41 million native Spanish speakers living in the US today — and another 11.6 million people who are bilingual. In fact, there are more Spanish speakers in the United States than there are speakers of Chinese, French, Italian, Hawaiian, and the Native American languages combined.

As well as making you more marketable, learning Spanish will enable you to keep pace with the powerful Hispanic influence on today’s popular culture. In addition, while it is certainly possible to travel to a Spanish-speaking country without knowing any Spanish, knowing Spanish will completely transform your travel experience.

Spanish has been described as a language that is “almost phonetically perfect”, meaning that once you know the basic rules of pronunciation, you can correctly pronounce any word you see. It is also a gateway to other languages that you might want to learn at university or later in life, such as Italian or Portuguese.

Staff: Ms B. Fahy, Mrs R. McIntosh, Mrs R. Crawford

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3 students learn to identify and use tenses and other grammatical structures. They express themselves both orally and in writing with increasing accuracy and detail. As with French and German, students of Spanish read literary texts in the language, such as stories, songs, poems and letters, to stimulate ideas, develop creative expression and expand understanding of the language and culture

Spanish is studied from Year 9 onwards (pupils choose between German and Spanish). The topics of study include All About Me, My Family and Home, School Life, Free Time, Holidays, Food & Drink, Jobs & Future Plans and Healthy Living.

Key Stage 4

Pupils are advised to choose at least one language for GCSE. At Key Stage 4 students of Spanish build on their progress in Key Stage 3. Through frequent vocabulary tests and regular use of past papers pupils become more confident at coping with the demands of GCSE listening and reading. Written and oral work becomes more sophisticated and there is greater use of idiom, for example.

The topics areas which are tested include:
1. The Individual – Relationships, Environment, Daily Routine & Leisure, Health &Lifestyle
2. Citizenship – Travel and Tourism, Media, Spanish Celebrations, Social Issues
3. Employability – School life, Part-time jobs, Future plans

Speaking 30% Assessed through controlled assessment; two tasks during Year 11 / Year 12

Key Stage 5

The AS and A2 Spanish courses allow students to communicate and understand Spanish in a wide range of contexts and settings. Through the course pupils develop awareness and understanding of Spanish-speaking society, and they explore Spanish grammar in much more depth. Pupils also have the opportunity to read Spanish literature and watch Spanish cinema in the original language. The A Level course is a sound basis for the further study of languages at degree level or equivalent although the skills and knowledge acquired are useful transferable skills even for those pupils who do not progress to studying Spanish at a third-level setting.

Ruth Fannin
Year I left ERGS: 2019

A” Level subjects studied: Technology and Design, Mathematics and Business Studies (Spanish at AS Level)

Pathway after school: Started university in September 2019 whilst working part-time in my family business as Assistant Shop Manager

University attended: Queen’s University Belfast

Course studied: Business Management with Placement (4 years)

I started at Queen’s University Belfast in September 2019 and enjoyed a few months of a “normal” university experience before COVID-19 brought a sudden shift to online learning in March 2020.

During my time at university, I was awarded Top Business Management Student (2019/2020) and Top Student for History and Philosophy. I also completed the Degree Plus Award for Future Ready Skills in Management before graduating in 2023 with a First Class Honours degree.

After graduating, I was approached on LinkedIn about an opportunity that led to me joining the Oil Market Journal (OMJ) as Business Development Manager in Enniskillen in September 2023.

Although I have always lived at home in County Tyrone, I am very grateful for the opportunities I have had to travel with work, including visits to Dubai, Spain, Italy, Poland and Germany, as well as across the UK and Ireland.

Outside of work, I help out in my family business and volunteer both as a Girlguiding leader and as a youth club leader within my church. Through Girlguiding, I have also enjoyed incredible experiences, including spending a week as part of the crew on a Tall Ships yacht and, more recently, completing the Queen’s Guide Award — the highest award available within Girlguiding UK.

I am very grateful to both the Collegiate and Enniskillen Royal Grammar School for providing me with such a strong foundation and for encouraging the values of hard work, resilience and determination from an early age.

Year I left: 2020

Subjects: Geography, Biology and English Literature

As part of the first full GCSE cohort of the school, I left ERGS on a random day in March 2020. Our formal was cancelled and we all expected to be back after a couple of weeks — but we all know what happened next.

I knew the COVID-19 pandemic was going to ruin the typical “freshers” experience, so I deferred my place at Newcastle University to work in my local SPAR for a year. I was sad seeing all my friends leave, but I built up money and work experience that helped open doors for me in the future.

I’d recommend Newcastle to any student. I made some amazing memories and left with a First Class BSc in Environmental Science with Placement, along with an award for the best dissertation in my year.

My placement year was spent as an Assistant Geo-Environmental Consultant at Tetra Tech in Belfast. I worked on some really big projects, including the GeoEnergyNI demonstrator project - the first large-scale geothermal investigation of Northern Ireland.

I am currently studying a Master’s Degree in Forestry for Green Sustainable Development at Linnaeus University in Sweden. There are no tuition fees in Sweden for EU citizens or those with an Irish passport, so I think this is a pathway that should be promoted more often. I really love it over here and everything is taught in English, so don’t worry if your Swedish isn’t up to scratch!

Thank you to Mr Beddard for shouting at me to fix my deforestation homework. It turns out I’m quite good at talking about trees after all!
