Yr12 Ellie McCartney was one of less than 60 swimmers in Ireland to qualify for the Swim Ireland National Swim Trials. The Olympic Qualifying event was held in the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin over 5 days. The 16-year-old student chose to take part in two events with heats, semi-finals and finals in both the 100m Breaststroke and 200m Individual Medley. In the former event, Ellie swam close to her personal best and was in the heat with Irish Record holder, Mona McSharry, when she swam to a consideration time for the Tokyo Olympics.
Later in the week the Year 12 pupil competed alongside several Paralympians and won her heat with a PB of almost two seconds.
This was a fantastic opportunity for Ellie to swim together with Ireland’s Elite swimmers given the disruption over the last 14 months since her last competitive outing at this level. her times were impressive, and she is looking forward to any future events.
