Aquinas took the initial lead in the opening five minutes with two confident goals from the midfield but it was McCutcheon who opened the scoring for ERGS with an impressive solo run and finish 2-1. Despite some impressive keeping from the home side Wilson then scored a second from a corner to level 2-2. Aquinas then claimed a third as their striker beat Gawley in a one on one tussle and the shot was just too much of a stretch for Lucy in goal. Unwilling to go down without a fight, Rowland and Morrison attacked again with Morrison claiming a 3rd for ERGS. Aquinas then scored a forth from a penalty leaving the score a competitive 4-3 to the hosts at half time.
From the restart, with a number of substitutions made the ERGS boys seemed determined to fight back dominating possession for the first 5, however an impressive free kick from the Aquinas right wing nudged them further ahead 5-3. Despite a similar opportunity in the following minutes, Cairns’s shot landed a foot wide. The ERGS boys continued to play hard, keeping the hosts in their own half but just couldn’t seem to find the net despite several well worked strikes. With the bench emptied, in the final minutes both sides continued their attack with the keepers having to work hard to prevent further scores, but it was the host side who secured the final goal of the day as the striker caught Wallace off his line and slotted the ball over the top.
Final score Aquinas 6 ERGS 3.
ERGS MOM – Dylan McCutcheon.
