On Friday 25th November a group of our Yr13 Government and Politics pupils attended the NICCY ‘The Right Way’ young people’s discussion event. The conference was attended by young people from all over the province and provided them with an opportunity to discuss key issues faced by young people in NI society.
Key topics included Education, Poverty and Mental Health and in each discussion MLAs, including ex-collegian Rosemnary Buchanan, and representative from the Education Authoiry were asked by the pupils to explain how the Goverment and authorities intended to address each of the UN’s ‘Concluding Observations’ set out in its recommendations for the rights of children and young people.
The boys and girls from Enniskillen Royal had plenty to say and displayed impressive maturity and ability when engaging local politicians in discussion. Our favourite line of the day came from Darragh McElroy who when discussing the issue of youth poverty and inequality with MLA Michelle Gildernew stated that
“Poverty should not be allowed to become your identity”.
A very enjoyable day and great to see our young people so engaged in politics for the future, well done to all involved!!
