Congratulations to our Senior Girls and their coaches who have won the first round of the Ulster Cup Blitz competitions today with 3 convincing wins and now progress onto round two with an eye on earning their place in the Irish finals.
Enniskillen Royal Grammar Schools Senior Girls 7s squad started their competitive season for the Ulster Girls 7s Cup yesterday, Wednesday 24th, in Cookstown in the first of 3 series.
There was a bit of excitement for the girls during their warm-up when Ross Finlay, one of their coaches from last year, arrived from England to watch the days events.
The first game was against Maghe Ene, Co Donegal. ERGS settled well and played expansive rugby from the whistle. As in all the games on the day the full squad was utilised and all members slotted seamlessly into positions. ERGS held the score to 5-0 at half time but allowed Maghe Ene 2 tries in the second half leaving the final score 10-2 to ERGS.
Try scorers – Zara Flack 4, Lucy Thompson 3, Katie Hetherington 1, Katherine Graham 1 and Rebecca Beacom 1.
Loretto School, Letterkenny were the next opponents and the rucking in this game was phenomenal and the amount of turn over ball was just reward. Defensively ERGS lost a little shape in the first half but a few words at half time sorted this out and an 11-0 victory was secured.
Try scorers – Lucy Thompson 4, Katherine Graham 2, Katie Hetherington 2, India Daly 1 Rebecca Beacom 1 and Zara Flack 1.
With no break ERGS took on Cavan Royal next and from the start the support and off-loading was a pleasure to watch. The defensive line was strong and the use of space in offence paid dividends as the final score was 11-0.
Try scorers – Zara Flack 4, Lucy Thompson 4, Katie Hetherington 2 and Ellen Bloomfield 1.
The final match was against Armagh Royal. After having a break in the cold wind both teams were anxious to get into the game and within 30 seconds ERGS had scored their first try of the game. They continued to put Armagh under pressure any time they had the ball and forced many errors with their blitz defence. It was another solid performance leaving the final score at 11-1.

The whole squad played extremely well and, with last years seniors showing their experience and juniors joining the squad this year stepping up to the plate impressively, the girls should be very proud of themselves and travel to the All Ireland Schools Cup finals on November 7th in Donnybrook with confidence.
