Having comfortably beaten Belfast High School 6 games to 0 in late April, the Enniskillen senior boys tennis team faced a sterner test in their semi-final against Campbell College.
Jonah Balfour and Sam Morrison (Enniskillen’s 1 and 2) elected to play doubles first and what followed was a doubles match of the highest quality. The serves were fast and accurate, both teams used their full arsenal of baseline drives, top spin lobs, drop shots and smashes and the early part of the game went with serve. Campbell College proved very difficult to break down, defending smashes from two metres behind the baseline and making full use of the angles across the net to work their way back into points that, on another day, would have gone to the Enniskillen pair. Campbell College eventually took the match 10-8.
Jake Elliot and Kyle Deery played an equally impressive double match against the Campbell College 3 and 4. The momentum in this match also went back and forth between the two schools. Campbell College had two match points which Enniskillen successfully defended and Enniskillen pushed the match to a tiebreak. Good serving and shot choice won the Enniskillen pair the tiebreak and hence the match 10-9.
The singles matches were well fought but the Cambell College 1, 2, and 3 prevailed in their singles matches with only Kyle Deery winning his match at 4. This meant that Campell College took the quarter final. Well done to all players.
