WAVE TRAUMA CENTRE
FOLLOWING TRAUMA IN OUR COMMUNITY
Information Evening
Castle Park Centre
Lisnaskea
Monday November 10th at 7pm
Grainne McKenna, Trauma Education Officer with WAVE, will deliver a session exploring the nature of trauma, its aftermath, and the ripple effects that continue to shape individuals, families, and communities.
Although WAVE’s core work centres on Troubles-related trauma, Grainne will highlight that trauma is not confined to a single event or time period. She will explain how psychological wounds often remain invisible; affecting emotions, relationships, physical health, and a person’s sense of safety in the world.
The session will look at the hidden legacy of trauma and how one incident can impact not just the person directly harmed, but also their loved ones, wider networks, and even future generations. She will also explore common reactions such as shock, numbness, and complicated grief, and will reflect on why trauma can be difficult to talk about, recognise, or heal from.
Drawing on her work with victims and survivors across Northern Ireland, Grainne will emphasise that trauma is not a sign of personal weakness, but a human response to overwhelming experiences. She will introduce ways communities can better understand trauma, reduce stigma, and foster environments of compassion, connection, and support.
