On Friday 16th May 2025 Magee University hosted around 80 students from the Royal Academy of Engineering Connecting STEM Teachers network across Northern Ireland for the Amelia Earhart STEM Challenge.
Five of our Year 9 pupils travelled to Magee University this morning to take part. The event is Co-organised with the School of Computing, Engineering & Intelligent Systems. The event commemorated the 93rd anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s historic solo transatlantic flight and her unexpected landing near Derry in 1932.
Students took part in exciting design competitions from Longest Flying Distance to Best Plane Aesthetics showcasing their creativity, engineering talent and teamwork while celebrating Amelia’s incredible achievements and her special connection to the city.
Huge congratulations to our Year 9 pupils (Ellie McCauley, Hollie Sharpe, Matthew Brownlee, Martha McCreesh & Maya Kettyle ) who were winners of the Amelia Earhart Legacy Association Perpetual Trophy! Their reward? A thrilling helicopter ride over Co Fermanagh taking in breathtaking views of lough erne and beyond!
To top it off, Ulster University were also hosting the renaming ceremony for their engineering building as part of today’s event and our Year 9 pupils were invited to unveil the new name alongside the Mayor of Derry.
