The Classical Music Section of Fermanagh Feis was held through the week commencing 16th April 2018 and Enniskillen Royal Grammar School continued to build on their successes of last year’s competition. A number of ensembles competed and had success at a high level as well as individual pupils who competed in a range of solo classes from Beginner up to Grade 8 level. The Feis is intended to provide a positive performance platform for pupils where their skills may be celebrated. This is of benefit for pupils as they move up through their Music Grade development and is also highly beneficial for GCSE, AS and A2 pupils. In ensembles the Junior Choir had great fun preparing ‘Count on Me’ by Bruno Mars and ‘The Circle of Life’ from The Lion King. The choir was ably accompanied by Katie Bloomfield and Emma-Leah Peters (who played one piece each) and James Bloomfield also helped the pop feel of the Bruno Mars number with the addition of the drum-kit. In the Ensemble sections our Woodwind Ensemble which contained flutes, clarinet, alto saxophone and bassoon were highly impressive and the Senior Brass Ensemble achieved the highest mark of the Overall Classical Competition.
There was further success in Instrumental Solo classes ranging from beginner to Grade 8 level. Some notable successes include Ruth Beadle achieving the Overall Best Performance at Grade 5/6 level for her flute solo and Rachael Fyffe achieving the best overall performance at Grade 7/8 level for her cornet solos. There was further success in piano grades as well as in the Vocal Solo and Duet sections. Again we had a range of pupils who achieved winning medals and perhaps most notably Tully Irvine who won the Overall Singer of the Year as well as the Marie Wilson Cup and an award for Best Classical Musician.
Every pupil who participated either as a Soloist, part of an Instrumental group, Choir member or accompanist deserves warmest congratulations for the contributions they have made to this local community Music Festival, bringing Classical Music to the forefront of our school community and beyond. Well done to all!
