‘Better Together’ Project Concludes at American Ambassador’s Residence

    By Sinead Magee | Latest News | Comments are Closed | 28 April, 2023 | 0
Being invited to meet the American Ambassador at her residence in Dublin’s Phoenix Park was a great ending to a journey that began back in October 2022 for the ‘Better Together’ project, where pupils from Ballinamore Community School and Enniskillen Royal Grammar School got the opportunity to visit each other’s schools and communities and hear each other’s stories against the historical backdrop of ‘the troubles’.
The ambassador took great interest in the pupils’ collective endeavor, which took the form of a collage, piecing together the many perspectives and narratives they have explored over eight workshops and trips to both Belfast and Dublin. We were delighted that the pupils got the opportunity to engage with the ambassador and speak to her about their project.
During the project itself, we heard various visiting speakers including a PSNI Chief Inspector and a Garda Superintendent.  Many speakers resonated strongly with the pupils through their sharing of personal stories of grief and pain within their community, like the speakers from the Belfast Peace Walls Tour and, closer to home, Robert Northridge and Dean Kenneth Hall. The pupils learned how their generation are reaping the benefits of a peace that was forged 25 years ago by politicians and kept alive by the work of many individuals within their communities. The project itself is the brainchild of a community volunteer, Máirín Martin who is chairperson of Ballinamore Community Centre. Máirín attained funding for the project from the International Fund for Ireland.
Central to the collaboration was a trustworthy sharing of political and personal views and values and it was refreshing to witness the honesty and maturity of the young people involved. Keith Duggan, in his Irish Times article, observed that, ‘it does seem like an informal triumph to see a group of teenagers from divergent backgrounds talking and laughing in a classroom’. Hopefully, they have made friends along the way and hopefully, at some stage, they may find the opportunity to give back to their communities.  They certainly will have many lasting memories from a very worthwhile and enriching experience. We have just learned that pupils and staff will be invited to a symposium in Ballinamore in the Autumn to celebrate the achievements of the programme. In the meantime, congratulations and well done to all the pupils involved.

Success for Enniskillen Royal Grammar School Students in National Translation Competition

At the end of the summer term, we were delighted to learn of the success of three Enniskillen Royal Grammar School students who took part in the prestigious Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators, a national translation competition run by the Queen's Translation Exchange at the University of Oxford.
The 2026 competition attracted a record-breaking 25,000 pupils from 532 schools, further establishing it as the country's largest creative translation competition for young people.

We are pleased to report that our students achieved success in all three languages offered at Enniskillen Royal Grammar School.
Keon Neones was awarded the Level 1 Area Prize for Northern Ireland and was named National Runner-Up in the UK for French.
Lily Shaw won the Level 3 Northern Ireland Award for German.
Uma de Naipir received a Highly Commended award for her Level 3 translation from Spanish into English.
We are immensely proud of all three students, who demonstrated outstanding creativity, linguistic ability, and eloquence in their translations. As Dr Charlotte Ryland, Director of the Queen's Translation Exchange, explains:
"The skills developed through translation – critical thinking, problem solving, empathy – set the rising generation up to thrive in our global economy. Our Anthea Bell Prize winners excel in all these skills, and I can't wait to see what they go on to do."
We congratulate Keon, Lily and Uma on their excellent achievements and wish them every success in their future studies of French, German and Spanish, both at Enniskillen Royal Grammar School and beyond.

On Thursday 10th September, we were delighted to welcome back Sarah McDaid from Bank of Ireland to deliver the 'Planning Ahead Junior Programme' to pupils in 8B and 8D as part of the Preventative Curriculum.
During the session, Sarah explored a range of financial literacy topics, including budgeting, saving, distinguishing between needs and wants and developing confidence in making informed everyday financial decisions.
We are grateful to Sarah for sharing her expertise with our pupils and we look forward to welcoming her back later this month to work with pupils in 8A, 8C and 8E.
