Enniskillen Royal 2ndXV 19, Regent House 2ndXV 12

The final score suggests a much tighter game than it was in reality. Royal pinned Regent into their own half for the first 20 minutes but were unable to make a scoring breakthrough until Alex Holder determinedly finished one of the many excellent backs moves. Craig Johnston converted. Royal’s discipline in the forwards was excellent during this period while the visitors made it difficult for themselves by giving away a string of needless penalties. However, Regent fought back showing greater aggression at the ruck where they won a number of key turnovers, one of which led to a breakaway try late in the first half. Despite an equitable score at the turn of 7 points each it was clear that this game was Royal’s to lose.

Once again the home team had the luxury of bringing on a talented and experienced bench and they continued to dominate in the second half. The forwards were now holding their own in the rucks and line-outs but were completely dominant in the scrums. The backs ran some decisive lines in attack and played wonderful linking rugby to get themselves out of trouble in defence. The result was a repeat of the early first half control although this time Royal camped right on the Regent House 5 metre line. Time and time again the forwards attempted to force their way over only to be held up. Eventually they changed tactics and moved the ball to the backs where Mark Crawford stepped neatly inside his opposite number for Royal’s second try.

However, the pack had not finished trying to make their mark and the robust Kyle Hobson, one of the many players on the squad with considerable potential, eventually drove over to take the score to 19-7. With Johnston off the pitch these two tries went unconverted.

Following a number of forced substitutions and a slight drop in intensity Royal allowed Regent to get down behind their 22m line where the hosts gave away a series of penalties that left the last word to visitors and brought up a final score of 19-12. There is no doubt that there are tougher games ahead but equally the strength in depth of the squad will make the Royal’s 2nd XV a difficult team to overcome.

Carly Graham

Class of 2024

A’ Level Subjects Studied: Technology & Design, Mathematics and Business Studies (Physics at AS Level)

After leaving ERGS in 2024, I began studying for a BSc in Technology with Design at Ulster University Belfast. The course combines engineering, product design and manufacturing, allowing me to develop both my technical and creative skills. During my first year, I was delighted to be placed on the Dean's List in recognition of my academic performance.

Alongside university, I have continued working for Dunlop Kitchens, where I first completed my work experience placement in 2023 after recommendation by Mrs Kettyle. Following my work experience, I was offered a part time position and have worked there ever since. My role has given me experience in kitchen design, CAD, customer relations, marketing and business development. One of the highlights has been travelling to Germany on three occasions for industry events and training, including travelling independently to attend specialist training with BORA.

As part of my degree, I will begin a year long placement this summer as a Technical Design Engineer with Denroy Plastics in Bangor. I am looking forward to gaining hands on experience within the manufacturing industry before returning to university for my final year.

Outside of university and work, Highland Dancing has been a huge part of my life since I was four years old. After gaining my teaching qualifications in 2023, I recently established my own dance school, Carly Graham School of Highland Dance, where I teach young dancers within my local community. I have also had the privilege of performing at a number of major events, including dancing for King Charles III and Queen Camilla during their visit to Enniskillen and performing as part of the Belfast International Tattoo.

Looking back, Technology & Design played a significant role in shaping my career path. Across my three years of coursework, I achieved marks of 100%, 100% and 98%, and I am particularly grateful to the Technology & Design department, especially Mr McDevitt, whose support, encouragement and enthusiasm helped me develop both academically and personally throughout my time at ERGS.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities and encouragement I received during my time at ERGS. The school gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities both locally and internationally, and I look forward to seeing where my studies, placement year and future career in design engineering will take me.
