    Medallions Bowl Quarter Final

By Enniskillen Royal | Latest News, Rugby Match Reports | Comments are Closed | 30 January, 2017 | 1

    ERGS Medallions – 29 Ballymena Academy Medallions – 5

Enniskillen Royal Grammar School welcomed Ballymena Academy to Castle Lane on a dry and sunny Saturday morning to contest the quarter final of the Medallion Bowl. The sides had never played each other before so the Enniskillen side were venturing into the unknown and didn’t know what to expect. There was one enforced change to the side as the influential Gauley was absent due to a family bereavement, however he was ably replaced by Keys at flanker with Smyton switching to No8.

Enniskillen started strong and exerted pressure. A 5 metre scrum resulted in the opening score when Smyton fed Mills who crashed over with only five minutes on the clock. With the conversion successful ERGS were 7 points ahead. An infringement at a scrum allowed Ballymena to kick a penalty back and reduce the arrears to 4 points.

ERGS’s pressure continued and a catch and drive from a lineout tied in the Ballymena defence, a gap opened which Greenaway exploited to extend the Enniskillen lead. However the Fermanagh team wasn’t having everything their own way, Ballymena’s counter rucking was causing them huge problems while trying to retain the ball.

Ballymena tried to reduce the deficit but try as they might the impressive backrow of Rooney, Keys and Smyton were up to the challenge and tackled everything that moved. Carnduff was controlling the lineout and it was from such a set piece that set up a driving maul which almost resulted in another score, but a dogged defence meant the score remained 12-3 in Enniskillen’s favour at halftime.

As the second half got under way Ballymena upped their game and threaten the ERGS line but great defence by Malone, Thompson and particularly Totten forced ‘Mena’ into giving away a penalty to relieve the pressure. Strong ball carrying by White, Crawford and Rutledge were causing the Ballymena pack all sorts of problems and it was only a matter of time before ERGS would extend their lead. Foster received the ball and the young flyhalf interested the cover defence enough to allow Mills space to feed his centre partner Morton who finished well and with conversion successful, the scoreboard now read 19-3.

Ballymena responded and continued to attack, they took play into the Enniskillen half where it took a tremendous defensive effort from the Fermanagh based side to thwart the attack; this was epitomised by a tremendous tackle from scrumhalf Bothwell. As the game reached the closing stages ERGS’s make their way into the opposition’s half once again. Centre Morton gathered a loose ball and scampered his way to score his second try . ERGS’s were not finished and after great pressure from the pack on the Ballymena line, Bothwell fed winger Fraser who finished superbly in the right hand corner to complete the scoring and leave the final score 29-3.

This was probably ERGS medallions best performance of the season while considering they were playing against one of the strongest rugby schools in Ulster. It was also great to see Irish rugby legend Jimmy McCoy at the game and he was obviously very pleased to see his old alma mater getting the victory they deserved. The hours on the training paddock are now paying dividends which is great to see. The team now look forward to a home semi-final clash versus Coleraine Grammar on Tuesday 7th February – bring it on!

    Jack Kennedy
    Class of 2020

Subjects studied at A’ Level: Maths, Geography, Technology & Design, and BTEC Engineering (South West College)

Post School Pathway: MEng Civil Engineering, Newcastle University, including an industrial placement year with GRAHAM Construction

Current Role: Graduate Civil Engineer, GRAHAM Construction

After leaving ERGS in 2020, I moved to Newcastle to study Civil Engineering at Newcastle University. During my degree, I completed a placement year with GRAHAM Construction, where I had the opportunity to work on the Leith Outer Berth project in Scotland. The £50 million project forms part of Scotland’s largest renewable energy hub, supporting the development of offshore wind energy. It was my first experience of working on a project of that scale and gave me a real appreciation for the role civil engineers play in delivering major infrastructure projects.

Following my placement year, I returned to Newcastle to complete my degree before going on to study for a Master’s in Civil Engineering. The combination of university life and practical experience helped confirm that engineering was the career path I wanted to follow.

University wasn’t all lectures and assignments, though. I was a member of Newcastle University Boat Club and had the privilege of competing at the Henley Royal Regatta, which was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my time there. After rowing, I took up rugby again during the 2023/24 season, having also played throughout my time at school. Balancing sport alongside school and university taught me a lot about managing my time and making the most of the opportunities available. More recently, I have developed a passion for endurance sport and, in 2025, completed Ironman Copenhagen, as well as taking part in several other Ironman events.

After graduating, I returned to GRAHAM Construction as a Graduate Civil Engineer and am currently based in Dundee, working on another offshore wind project. It’s been great to return to a company that played such an important role in my development during my placement year and to continue building my career in an industry that is contributing to the future of renewable energy.

Looking back, my time at both Portora Royal School and ERGS helped shape the person I am today. The support and encouragement I received from teachers gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. Whether it was through academics, sport or extracurricular activities, school taught me the importance of working hard, getting involved and being willing to step outside my comfort zone.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned since leaving school, it’s that you don’t have to have everything figured out straight away. Being open to new experiences has led me to opportunities I never would have imagined when I was sitting in the classrooms at Portora and ERGS. From moving away from home and competing at Henley to completing an Ironman and working on major engineering projects, it’s been an exciting journey so far, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it takes me next.

🎉 Congratulations to Michael Clarke (Past-Pupil)🎉

We were delighted to receive news from the University of Dundee of Michael’s outstanding success at his degree show.

Michael was surprised to learn on the opening morning of the show that he had been selected to receive an award for his work. The award was presented later that day at a prize-giving ceremony.

His final project, a movable cocktail bar, proved such a success that it has already been purchased by a cocktail bar business. In addition to the award, Michael received a £250 cash prize, the highest cash prize presented.

The degree show, showcased students’ work to local businesses, members of the public and representatives from other universities. To cap off an excellent few days, Michael later received confirmation of his final degree results, graduating with a 2:1 Honours degree.

A fantastic achievement and a wonderful reward for all of Michael’s hard work. We congratulate him and wish him every happiness and success in the future.
