Enniskillen Royal GS Medallions vs Foyle College ‘Danska Bank Ulster Schools’ Medallion Trophy Final’ – Match Report

By Enniskillen Royal | Latest News, Rugby Match Reports | Comments are Closed | 4 March, 2019 | 3

Saturday 2nd March’s weather forecast proved a challenge but did not hinder the determination of the Enniskillen Royal Grammar School Medallions as they travelled to the neutral ground of Rainey Endowed to take on Foyle College in this year’s Danska Bank Ulster Schools’ Medallion Trophy Final. Having had a disheartening season, riddled with injury and hard fought losses, the last three months of hard work and dramatic improvement had allowed the ERGS boys to fight their way through the heats, quarter and semi finals to earn themselves a chance to end their schools’ junior rugby adventure on a high, playing the team they started against three years ago at U13 level.

From the kick off the ERGS boys immediately put Foyle under pressure, asserting themselves on the game and hammering at the Foyle line through strong running and well rehearsed set piece plays. As the forwards carried wide into the 10-12 channel, offloading in contact and keeping the ball alive, it was only ten minutes before No.8 Guobys crashed towards the line stretching his arms over his head to gain the first 5 points of the game. The inclement weather made the kick a near impossible feat for Owen but the boys had laid down a marker of things to come. Minutes later the ERGS boys were threatening again but this time through the back line. As the forwards successfully recycled the ball through three phases, it was No.10 Love who called the infamous ‘blocker’ move to see center Irvine come across on a convincing dummy run whilst fellow center Harron stepped the first defender and then chipped over to the flying full back Ingram, who took the ball on the full and then offloaded post contact to winger Owen. Unfortunately the conditions meant the ball slipped through his hands and into touch just metres from the line. The first half continued to see both sides create chances but repeatedly hindered by the wind and rain which forced frustrating mistakes.

As the second half commenced it was Foyle who opened the scoring with an excellent passage of play seeing a great opportunistic offload from their talented fullback, allowing their number 10 to accelerate around the defensive line and touch down to the far right of the posts. Again the increasingly unpleasant conditions prevented the successful conversion, 5-5. This was the wake-up call that ERGS needed and they started once again to dominate play through solid work by the forwards. Read’s line-out throwing was outstanding, as locks Browne and Kathro sailed into the air to collect and distribute clean ball to captain McConkey. The impressive work rate of the flankers Johnston-Martin, Smyton and Elliott, meant that the ball was sealed off at each breakdown whilst punch running from front rows Cullinan, Read, Bagrev and Clarke constantly challenged the resilient Foyle defence. It was the ERGS scrummage which then became Folye’s nemesis; repeatedly pushing the trailing side off their own ball, it wasn’t long before Guobys Stuck again with a quick pickup and charge over the line, 10-5. The recent months of gym work and fitness training now began to pay off as the ERGS boys maintained their momentum for the remaining quarter of the game. As Owen was forced to leave the field after a high tackle, Johnston got his opportunity to boss the defensive line and close the door on any Foyle advance mirrored on the other side of the park by Smith’s aggressive tackling. In the dying minutes ERGS found themselves back in the Foyle 22 and as they tried to clear their lines with a box kick it was Guobys who lept in front of the kicker for an impressive charge-down and collect scoring his hat trick, 15-5. With only minutes to go, it was now just a case of closing out the game and the two remaining substitutes Bloomfield and Pattison got onto the pitch to mark their equally tremendous involvement in the journey through the last 4 seasons of school rugby, cheered on by a proud but frustrated Weir who’s pre semi-final shoulder dislocation kept him on the bench but still firmly involved.

Final score 15-5, ERGS Medallions crowned ‘Danska Bank Ulster Schools’ Medallion Trophy Champions 2019’.

    Squad

    N Cullinan, P Read, N Clarke, A Bagrev, M Browne, D Kathro, A Johnston-Martin, H Elliott, T Weir, L Smyton, K Guobys, P McConkey, D Love, D Harron, Q Irvine, S Owen, M Smith, H Ingram, D Johnston, J Bloomfield, G Pattison,

This squad with their coaches Beddard, Pattison and Harron understood the need to dig deep again and again, in the ground of failure. By doing that with determination and resolve, they have found huge success and are now the holders of the Trophy which they brought home to Enniskillen Royal Grammar School on Saturday.

    Hannah Shaw

I left ERGS in 2020 during the start of COVID - crazy times.

I studied Biology, Chemistry and Business Studies at A’ Level.

After ERGS, I joined Queen’s University Belfast to pursue a degree in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology. Between my second and third year, I undertook a placement year working as a Pharmaceutical Analyst for Almac in Craigavon. I finished my degree with First Class Honours and received two awards sponsored by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry for Best Research Project and Overall Distinction in Final Year Studies.

After finishing my degree, I applied for - and was awarded - a scholarship funded by the Department for the Economy to pursue a full-time research-based PhD. I started in 2024 and my project focuses on breast cancer research.

Outside of academia, I have supported my sister in growing her business, Enniskinn, which opened its second store in Enniskillen last week. We manufacture all of our products in Enniskillen and now have over 100 wholesalers across the world, mainly across the UK and Ireland. My Business Studies A’ Level with Mrs Donnelly has definitely been useful at times!

When I have the time, I enjoy sailing, with my most ambitious trip so far being an English Channel crossing from Southampton to La Rochelle in France. I obtained a Day Skipper licence for yachts up to 80ft and I’m hoping to complete a transatlantic crossing in the next few years. If I wasn’t any good at science, I would most definitely be a sailor!

    Ruth Fannin
    Year I left ERGS: 2019

A” Level subjects studied: Technology and Design, Mathematics and Business Studies (Spanish at AS Level)

Pathway after school: Started university in September 2019 whilst working part-time in my family business as Assistant Shop Manager

    University attended: Queen’s University Belfast

Course studied: Business Management with Placement (4 years)

I started at Queen’s University Belfast in September 2019 and enjoyed a few months of a “normal” university experience before COVID-19 brought a sudden shift to online learning in March 2020.

During my time at university, I was awarded Top Business Management Student (2019/2020) and Top Student for History and Philosophy. I also completed the Degree Plus Award for Future Ready Skills in Management before graduating in 2023 with a First Class Honours degree.

After graduating, I was approached on LinkedIn about an opportunity that led to me joining the Oil Market Journal (OMJ) as Business Development Manager in Enniskillen in September 2023.

Although I have always lived at home in County Tyrone, I am very grateful for the opportunities I have had to travel with work, including visits to Dubai, Spain, Italy, Poland and Germany, as well as across the UK and Ireland.

Outside of work, I help out in my family business and volunteer both as a Girlguiding leader and as a youth club leader within my church. Through Girlguiding, I have also enjoyed incredible experiences, including spending a week as part of the crew on a Tall Ships yacht and, more recently, completing the Queen’s Guide Award — the highest award available within Girlguiding UK.

I am very grateful to both the Collegiate and Enniskillen Royal Grammar School for providing me with such a strong foundation and for encouraging the values of hard work, resilience and determination from an early age.
