Our team were thrilled to travel to London on Wednesday 25th May to represent Northern Ireland in the UK final of the National Reading Champions quiz. Barry Hutchinson 10D, Emma Bullock 9E, Livia Gallagher 9A and Freya Boyd McManus 8C competed with 21 other teams in this exciting competition run by the National Literacy Trust (a replacement for the “Kids Lit Quiz which our school have been very successful in reaching the Singapore final). A diverse range of categories were covered in an intensive 2-hour quiz including “books set in school”, “food in children’s classics” and “recently published books”. Guest speaker was multi-award winning YA author Patrice Lawrence. Although the team did not win the overall prize they delivered a wonderful performance and particularly shone in their knowledge of “prize winning books” and “closing lines”. It was great to compete with the top readers in the UK in this prestigious event and also to receive our trophy for winning the Northern Ireland heat – Massive congratulations!
Here’s what some of the team said:
“This was a wonderful experience. I really enjoyed expanding my knowledge on books and I hope it encourages others to do the same” – Emma
“It was a brilliant experience it showed us all how important it is to read and to share the knowledge of books” – Freya
Laden with books – and our lucky mascot John the giraffe!
