The Enniskillen Royal Grammar School swimming team travelled to Larne Leisure Centre on Saturday 11th January to compete in the Ulsters Schools Swimming Junior Cup Gala. With a depleted team due to the school’s ski trip and no senior section, only four swimmers were able to attended the gala.
First up in the morning session was Anna Cairns (Year 8) swimming in the 100m Breaststroke. Even though Anna has not been in training for a month she produced a dynamic swim in the final heat giving her a new 2 second PB. Next to swim was Oliver Mooney (Year 8) in the 100m Breaststroke. A determined swim by Oliver gaining him a new PB. The final swim in the morning for the ERGS team was Anna in the 100m Freestyle. Her strong swim gained her another new PB of 3 seconds. A great start to the year for the two junior swimmers.
The afternoon session was for the Intermediate swimmers, Ellie McCartney and Molly Johnston, both Year 11 students. Ellie returned from the gala with Gold in both the 100m Breaststroke and the 100m Individual Medley for the fifth consecutive year. She finished in 1st place by more than 3 seconds over the four lengths of the pool in the heat declared 100mIM. This was followed up with a similar winning margin in the final of the 100m Breaststroke leaving her in pole position to qualify for the USSA London Training Trip. Molly also swam in the 100m Breaststroke, winning her heat to gain a place in the finals. Producing a new PB in the finals and finishing as the 3rd fastest 15 year old and 5th overall in the event. Molly’s second swim was the 100m IM with a fantastic swim, gaining another new PB and also finishing as 3rd fastest 15 year old and 8th overall in the event. A great start to the year with an exciting season ahead for Molly.
