    Inter-Schools Showjumping Success

    By Enniskillen Royal | Latest News | Comments are Closed | 27 March, 2018 | 0

On Monday 26th March, 8 ERGS pupils attended the Drumragh Inter-Schools Showjumping Competition, held at the Ecclesville Centre in Fintona.
We entered a novelty competition as a little warm-up – the Run-Ride. Out of all the teams that entered, Tiana-Grace Abbott and her sister Lucie-Ann won the event in a mixed school pairing, narrowly beating into second place, our own school pairing of… Tiana-Grace Abbott and Hannah Jones. Well done to those girls and to Louie who was ridden by both the pairing! A good start to what was to be a long, but fruitful day.
Our next event was the Intermediate Class – the jumps in this class were set between 75cm-85cm. Our team consisted:-
Mairead Gartland on Cruise on Sahara
    Natalie Somerville on Beauty
Sophia Williams on Clonlee Red River
    Patrick Williams on Rossfad Runaway
To begin the Class, the team won 1st place in Tack and Turnout! They then went on to very well in the actual jumping event. Mairead started them off with a double clear round in a strong time; Natalie followed with a second double clear and a faster time, then Sophia with a third double clear and an equally fast time. Patrick was the final jumper – he had a fantasic time, with unfortunately one fence down at the end. In total, the combined efforts of the team won them a deserved 1st place for this Class, and as a result, The McGinn
Family Perpetual Cup. Due to her fast time, Natalie was also placed top 5th individual jumper in this class.
A superb achievement from the whole team and their horses.

The next class we entered was the Open. This was a class in which the jumps went up to between 95cm and 1m. a very popular class, with 12 teams entered. In this class, our team consisted:-
    Adrianna Hurst on Cody
Sophia Williams on Clonlee Red River
    Patrick Williams on Rossfad Runaway
We watched many of the other schools jumping ahead of us and saw that the course was going to be tricky. Only a few riders managed to get clear rounds. The team performed very well with Adrianna jumping first and doing so very well indeed. She completed her round with one fence down and a refusal. Patrick was next up – this was to be his first time jumping competitively at this height. He performed extremely well, with one refusal which, on his second, he almost cleared. Another strong round. Finally, we had Sophia. She also jumped well, again with one refusal and one fence down.
The whole team performed very well indeed and should be proud of themselves.

Thanks, as ever, to the wonderful support the riders have from their families. Without them, the teams wouldn’t be able to compete.

    Ruth Fannin
    Year I left ERGS: 2019

A” Level subjects studied: Technology and Design, Mathematics and Business Studies (Spanish at AS Level)

Pathway after school: Started university in September 2019 whilst working part-time in my family business as Assistant Shop Manager

    University attended: Queen’s University Belfast

Course studied: Business Management with Placement (4 years)

I started at Queen’s University Belfast in September 2019 and enjoyed a few months of a “normal” university experience before COVID-19 brought a sudden shift to online learning in March 2020.

During my time at university, I was awarded Top Business Management Student (2019/2020) and Top Student for History and Philosophy. I also completed the Degree Plus Award for Future Ready Skills in Management before graduating in 2023 with a First Class Honours degree.

After graduating, I was approached on LinkedIn about an opportunity that led to me joining the Oil Market Journal (OMJ) as Business Development Manager in Enniskillen in September 2023.

Although I have always lived at home in County Tyrone, I am very grateful for the opportunities I have had to travel with work, including visits to Dubai, Spain, Italy, Poland and Germany, as well as across the UK and Ireland.

Outside of work, I help out in my family business and volunteer both as a Girlguiding leader and as a youth club leader within my church. Through Girlguiding, I have also enjoyed incredible experiences, including spending a week as part of the crew on a Tall Ships yacht and, more recently, completing the Queen’s Guide Award — the highest award available within Girlguiding UK.

I am very grateful to both the Collegiate and Enniskillen Royal Grammar School for providing me with such a strong foundation and for encouraging the values of hard work, resilience and determination from an early age.

    Year I left: 2020

Subjects: Geography, Biology and English Literature

As part of the first full GCSE cohort of the school, I left ERGS on a random day in March 2020. Our formal was cancelled and we all expected to be back after a couple of weeks — but we all know what happened next.

I knew the COVID-19 pandemic was going to ruin the typical “freshers” experience, so I deferred my place at Newcastle University to work in my local SPAR for a year. I was sad seeing all my friends leave, but I built up money and work experience that helped open doors for me in the future.

I’d recommend Newcastle to any student. I made some amazing memories and left with a First Class BSc in Environmental Science with Placement, along with an award for the best dissertation in my year.

My placement year was spent as an Assistant Geo-Environmental Consultant at Tetra Tech in Belfast. I worked on some really big projects, including the GeoEnergyNI demonstrator project - the first large-scale geothermal investigation of Northern Ireland.

I am currently studying a Master’s Degree in Forestry for Green Sustainable Development at Linnaeus University in Sweden. There are no tuition fees in Sweden for EU citizens or those with an Irish passport, so I think this is a pathway that should be promoted more often. I really love it over here and everything is taught in English, so don’t worry if your Swedish isn’t up to scratch!

Thank you to Mr Beddard for shouting at me to fix my deforestation homework. It turns out I’m quite good at talking about trees after all!
