A beautiful day to take on a different challenge by travelling to Friends School Lisburn where the ERGS Senior Girls squad took on some of the Belfast based schools.
The girls started against the hosts Friends and while it took them a few minutes to get into their stride it was a triple of tries by Gemma Elliott, Sophie Moore and Madeline Hamill that got things rolling. Friends scored one of their own before Orlaith Maguire and Carla Smith got the last two making it a 5-1 result with Amy Meeke converting 3 of them.
Next up was Sullivan Upper and a strong team that gave the ERGS girls plenty to think about but they found a way to grind out a win 2-1 with both try’s by Amy Meeke and she also added one conversion.
The toughest challenge of the day then came in the form of Regent House as they’d won their previous two games as well. The two teams traded a try apiece to start with, with Madeline Hamill opening the ERGS account up. Then came the Regent comeback with the ERGS girls having to really dig deep but their superior fitness and speed at the end allowed them to run in two more try’s with Amy Meeke and Emma Fawcett getting them 3-1. Amy Meeke added one conversion.
Final game was against last year’s Schools Cup opposition, Assumption Grammar. The girls were tiring and they let the first score in but that woke them up and with impressive try’s by Carla Smith and two by Sophie Moore and another Amy Meeke conversion ended the day with a 3-1 win.
This was a super test of the girls and the other players involved (Alex Boyd, Jodie Thompson, Hannah Dundas, Rianna Mulligan & Jessy Irwin) provided the quality in the depth of the squad that no other school seem to have at this point. However, this was a very useful Blitz against schools they hadn’t faced all season and there were a few still to come back from injury to boost the squad as well.
All in all, a very useful event with much to learn for the Qualifiers on 26th February.
