Limerick Regatta – 16 Wins for ERBC

    By Sinead Magee | Latest News | Comments are Closed | 25 April, 2023 | 0
53 crews from ERBC travelled to O’Briens Bridge to compete in Limerick Regatta. The J15 and above competed over 1500m, while the J14 age group covered 1000m. The water conditions were good but the rain made the day challenging to say the least, however the rowers coped really well and came home with 16 category wins.
The WJ18+ crew of Eva Johnston, Clodagh O’Donnell, Rachel Cullinan, Chloe Thompson, Laura Turner, Niamh Cassidy, Rhea Cartin – McCloskey, Kate Huddlestone and cox Jessica Thompson had a fantastic win over the girls from Castleconnell BC. This was the first time the crews have raced each other since Castleconnell won the category at Erne Head back in March and ERBC’s girls were delighted to cross the finish line first.
In the WJ18 4- Rachel Cullinan, Chloe Thompson, Laura Turner and Acorn Cassidy
had another win over Castleconnell BC and the girls also won the Junior Coxless Quad category.
WJ15 8+ A, Annie Fowler, Meabh Murphy, Zara Welsh, Erin Trimble, Naomi Robinson, Mya Morris, Hannah Armstrong, Rhea Cartin McCloskey cox Jessica Thompson overcame the challenge from St Michael’s RC and the other ERBC crew to take the win.
WJ14 8X+ A Grace Collins, Abbie McCarthy Magwood, Tori Davis, Brook Davies, Abbey Johnston, Emily Black, Natalie Turner, Isabella Wright and cox Abbey Wilson took the win over Cork BC
WJ14 4X+ A Abbey Johnston, Emily Black, Natalie Turner, Isabella Wright and cox Abbey Wilson also won that category.
WJ14 4X+ B won their final over the crew from Shannon RC and ERBC’s C crew
In the boys’ events the MJ18 8+ A and B crews were unfortunately the only 2 crews in the category so they raced each other in mixed crews for the racing experience and the ‘A’ crew finished ahead of the ‘B’ crew.
The same thing happened in the MJ18 4+ event with 3 ERBC racing each other. Nathan Kelly, George Kernaghan, Oran Harty, Marcus Davis Kunze and cox Katelyn Fee crossed the line ahead of the other 2 crews and lifted the medals.
Evan Donaghy, Andrew Cuthbertson, Austin Cassidy, Luke Bailey and Katelyn Fee had a great win in the MJ15 4X+ category over the boys from Cork BC
The B crew, Ben Cameron, Jamie Dunlop, Ryan Topping, Charlie Lynn and Jessica Thompson also won their MJ15 4X+ straight final over the crews from Killorglin and Athlunkard.
The MJ14 4X+ Jacob Woods, Joshua Ihnat, Olie Powell, Cillian Donaghy and cox Oliver McNeary won their final and were delighted to receive the coveted medals.  The 5 boys then teamed up with Oliver Jennings, Shane O’Donnell, Joel Crean and Cameron Bell to take the MJ14 8X+ title.
In the MJ15 8X+ finals there had to be a change in the crews as some of the boys were taking part in another race at launch time. The ERBC A boat was unfortunately pipped at the finish line by the boys from Castleconnell RC while the ERBC B boat won their final.
Ethan Downey, Eoghan Campbell, Ryan Topping, Lorcan Sreenivasan, Evan Donaghy, Andrew Cutbertson, Austin Cassidy, Luke Bailey and Katelyn Fee then won the MJ15 8+ much to everyone’s delight.
The MJ16 8+ crew George Kernaghan, Owen Kelly, Eoghan Campbell, Jake Sembhi, Justin Smith, Joe Murphy, Hugo McChesney, William Bogle and cox Daniel Montgomery had a lovely strong win over St Michael’s.
Many thanks to everyone who travelled to Limerick with the rowers and helped the coaching team on an extremely busy day for ERBC.
Next for the rowers is Portadown Regatta this Saturday and Lough Rynn Regatta on Saturday, 6th May.

    Ruth Fannin
    Year I left ERGS: 2019

A” Level subjects studied: Technology and Design, Mathematics and Business Studies (Spanish at AS Level)

Pathway after school: Started university in September 2019 whilst working part-time in my family business as Assistant Shop Manager

    University attended: Queen’s University Belfast

Course studied: Business Management with Placement (4 years)

I started at Queen’s University Belfast in September 2019 and enjoyed a few months of a “normal” university experience before COVID-19 brought a sudden shift to online learning in March 2020.

During my time at university, I was awarded Top Business Management Student (2019/2020) and Top Student for History and Philosophy. I also completed the Degree Plus Award for Future Ready Skills in Management before graduating in 2023 with a First Class Honours degree.

After graduating, I was approached on LinkedIn about an opportunity that led to me joining the Oil Market Journal (OMJ) as Business Development Manager in Enniskillen in September 2023.

Although I have always lived at home in County Tyrone, I am very grateful for the opportunities I have had to travel with work, including visits to Dubai, Spain, Italy, Poland and Germany, as well as across the UK and Ireland.

Outside of work, I help out in my family business and volunteer both as a Girlguiding leader and as a youth club leader within my church. Through Girlguiding, I have also enjoyed incredible experiences, including spending a week as part of the crew on a Tall Ships yacht and, more recently, completing the Queen’s Guide Award — the highest award available within Girlguiding UK.

I am very grateful to both the Collegiate and Enniskillen Royal Grammar School for providing me with such a strong foundation and for encouraging the values of hard work, resilience and determination from an early age.

    Daniel Gilmore

    Year I left: 2020

Subjects: Geography, Biology and English Literature

As part of the first full GCSE cohort of the school, I left ERGS on a random day in March 2020. Our formal was cancelled and we all expected to be back after a couple of weeks — but we all know what happened next.

I knew the COVID-19 pandemic was going to ruin the typical “freshers” experience, so I deferred my place at Newcastle University to work in my local SPAR for a year. I was sad seeing all my friends leave, but I built up money and work experience that helped open doors for me in the future.

I’d recommend Newcastle to any student. I made some amazing memories and left with a First Class BSc in Environmental Science with Placement, along with an award for the best dissertation in my year.

My placement year was spent as an Assistant Geo-Environmental Consultant at Tetra Tech in Belfast. I worked on some really big projects, including the GeoEnergyNI demonstrator project - the first large-scale geothermal investigation of Northern Ireland.

I am currently studying a Master’s Degree in Forestry for Green Sustainable Development at Linnaeus University in Sweden. There are no tuition fees in Sweden for EU citizens or those with an Irish passport, so I think this is a pathway that should be promoted more often. I really love it over here and everything is taught in English, so don’t worry if your Swedish isn’t up to scratch!

Thank you to Mr Beddard for shouting at me to fix my deforestation homework. It turns out I’m quite good at talking about trees after all!
