The 60th Erne Head of the River – Saturday 4th March 2017

    By Enniskillen Royal | Rowing Reports | Comments are Closed | 6 March, 2017 | 0

The 60th Erne Head of the River took place on Saturday past, as Trinity College Dublin stormed to their third successive headship and Enniskillen Royal Boat Club continued to dominate the junior ranks.

As the sun surfaced for the first time in what was a turbulent week, Trinity’s senior men’s eight led the 86-boat field, a record entry, down the course in perfect conditions. The Dublin University crew completed the 4.52 miles in 18 minutes and 30 seconds, 3 seconds quicker than reigning Irish Champions Commercial Rowing Club. It was their third consecutive victory in this event. The fastest Women’s crew was NUIG’s intermediate eight who finished 7 seconds quicker than Commercial’s senior eight.

In the junior ranks, Enniskillen Royal Boat Club continued to exert its dominance at the top of Irish rowing. Having won the junior men’s eight at the Irish Championship for three consecutive years, the Enniskillen club shows no sign of slowing down. They won their category convincingly to finish 6th overall, beating all intermediate eights but UCD’s in the process. Their time of 19:02 was only 32 seconds slower than Trinity’s senior men’s eight.

The women’s junior eight produced a similarly dominant performance to win their category by nearly 40 seconds over nearest rivals Bann Rowing Club. Finishing 29th overall, they were beaten only by NUIG’s intermediate eight and Commercial’s senior eight. Sitting in the 4 seat was Maeve Donnelly who incredibly only started rowing in September.

Enniskillen Royal’s younger members also exhibited the club’s depth of strength on their home waters as the boy’s second eight, made up of 15 and 16 year olds made the step up to senior rowing to win the club 2 men’s eight by 20 seconds over their closest competitors from Neptune Rowing Club and finish 16th overall, while the girl’s junior 16 eight won their category by 25 seconds in a time of 24:27.

It was a first Erne Head of the River for a number of crews as the newly reformed Portora Boat Club, made up of Portora old boys and parents of Enniskillen Royal’s current crop of athletes, took to the water with two boats enter in the men’s masters eight. They finished 49th and 72nd overall. Meanwhile the race also had its first para-rowing entry with a composite crew from City of Derry and Castleconnell.

Winning the Waterway’s Ireland best overall senior team and junior team were Trinity’s men and Enniskillen Royal Boat Club respectively.

Enniskillen Royal Boat Club would like to congratulate all winners of the 60th Erne Head of the River and thank all of it’s sponsors and volunteers who contributed to what was described as ‘the highest quality’ head of the river race in the country.

    Jack Kennedy
    Class of 2020

Subjects studied at A’ Level: Maths, Geography, Technology & Design, and BTEC Engineering (South West College)

Post School Pathway: MEng Civil Engineering, Newcastle University, including an industrial placement year with GRAHAM Construction

Current Role: Graduate Civil Engineer, GRAHAM Construction

After leaving ERGS in 2020, I moved to Newcastle to study Civil Engineering at Newcastle University. During my degree, I completed a placement year with GRAHAM Construction, where I had the opportunity to work on the Leith Outer Berth project in Scotland. The £50 million project forms part of Scotland’s largest renewable energy hub, supporting the development of offshore wind energy. It was my first experience of working on a project of that scale and gave me a real appreciation for the role civil engineers play in delivering major infrastructure projects.

Following my placement year, I returned to Newcastle to complete my degree before going on to study for a Master’s in Civil Engineering. The combination of university life and practical experience helped confirm that engineering was the career path I wanted to follow.

University wasn’t all lectures and assignments, though. I was a member of Newcastle University Boat Club and had the privilege of competing at the Henley Royal Regatta, which was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my time there. After rowing, I took up rugby again during the 2023/24 season, having also played throughout my time at school. Balancing sport alongside school and university taught me a lot about managing my time and making the most of the opportunities available. More recently, I have developed a passion for endurance sport and, in 2025, completed Ironman Copenhagen, as well as taking part in several other Ironman events.

After graduating, I returned to GRAHAM Construction as a Graduate Civil Engineer and am currently based in Dundee, working on another offshore wind project. It’s been great to return to a company that played such an important role in my development during my placement year and to continue building my career in an industry that is contributing to the future of renewable energy.

Looking back, my time at both Portora Royal School and ERGS helped shape the person I am today. The support and encouragement I received from teachers gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. Whether it was through academics, sport or extracurricular activities, school taught me the importance of working hard, getting involved and being willing to step outside my comfort zone.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned since leaving school, it’s that you don’t have to have everything figured out straight away. Being open to new experiences has led me to opportunities I never would have imagined when I was sitting in the classrooms at Portora and ERGS. From moving away from home and competing at Henley to completing an Ironman and working on major engineering projects, it’s been an exciting journey so far, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it takes me next.

🎉 Congratulations to Michael Clarke (Past-Pupil)🎉

We were delighted to receive news from the University of Dundee of Michael’s outstanding success at his degree show.

Michael was surprised to learn on the opening morning of the show that he had been selected to receive an award for his work. The award was presented later that day at a prize-giving ceremony.

His final project, a movable cocktail bar, proved such a success that it has already been purchased by a cocktail bar business. In addition to the award, Michael received a £250 cash prize, the highest cash prize presented.

The degree show, showcased students’ work to local businesses, members of the public and representatives from other universities. To cap off an excellent few days, Michael later received confirmation of his final degree results, graduating with a 2:1 Honours degree.

A fantastic achievement and a wonderful reward for all of Michael’s hard work. We congratulate him and wish him every happiness and success in the future.
