Tuesday saw the 1st XI travel the short distance to Fivemiletown College to take on a strong Wellington College side.
The ERGS team had a nervous start but despite this had an early chance on goal. However, the Belfast team rallied and dominated this quarter with numerous shots on goal. Aimee was a role model captain and encouraged and organised the defence. They held strong with Emily-Jane making some brilliant saves in her debut as keeper. The first quarter ended 0-0.
The game continued in the 2nd quarter with Wellington dominating the match. However, the determination of the ERGS girls was evident and they appeared to be gaining in confidence, playing their own game. Anna, playing centre back read the game brilliantly, cutting out passes from the strong Wellington forwards. The midfield of Annabel, Faith and Marianna helped to transition the ball out of defence and onto the forward line. However, in the 6th minute the first breakthrough was made by Wellington with a shot in at the back post. This was quickly followed by a 2nd on 10mins. A disappointing scoreline for ERGS after a much stronger quarter.
A quick start from Wellington in the third quarter saw them snatch a third goal . However, ERGS rose to the challenge and played some fantastic hockey. Lucy had a great run down the right wing, into the circle and crossed the ball to Leah who calmly slotted it into the back of the net.
The EGRS team continued to battle for a second goal, moving the ball flawlessly around the pitch and putting the Wellington defence under pressure. They came close on several occasions, however it was not to be. Wellington added a fourth and fifth in the 8th and 12th minutes ending ERGS hopes of a late fight back.
Unlike what the score line suggests, the game was very much end to end play and the defence of Ruby, Anna, Jane and Aimee held firm and the excellent goal keeping skills of Emily–Jane have to be commended. Unfortunately, Wellington were the stronger team on the day.
The team now look forward to their final league matches after Christmas where they can surely build on the performances to date. Good luck to Wellington in the next round.
