A group of our year 8 and 9 students have really enjoyed being part of the Junior Juries programme this year for the KPMG Book Awards Ireland 2026. Since the shortlist was announced on 4th February our young readers have been meeting weekly to read, discuss and assess the shortlisted titles, finally submitting a score for our favourite book. Our overall favourite was The Waters and The Wild by Eilish Fisher, a beautifully illustrated novel steeped in Irish folklore and which deals with grief, family and the power of hope in a creative and evocative way. We gave it a solid score of 95 out of 100, the highest of all our collective scores.
The award ceremony was screened on Monday May 18th as part of the International Literature Festival and the Junior Juries Award was won by Solo by Grainne O’Brien. The Eilis Dillon Award (for a debut author) was won by The Doomsday Club by Kevin Moran and Skipshock picked up the Judges’ Special Award.
Well done to all our Junior Jurors. Have a listen to our feedback for some of the shortlisted titles.

Congratulations to Year 10 pupil Chloe Cathcart, who was off school last week representing Northern Ireland at the prestigious Royal Windsor Horse Show in the Pony Club Dressage Home Nations competition.
Chloe was the youngest competitor in the Open section of the competition, with most competitors falling within the 18–25 age bracket. For a 14-year-old to compete so successfully at this level is an outstanding achievement.
Individually, Chloe finished an impressive 6th place, while the Northern Ireland team placed 5th overall.
Well done, Chloe!
